You’ve found out you are pregnant. What do you do now?

Firstly, we would like to congratulate you on your pregnancy. Pregnancy can be both an exciting and a daunting time for you and your loved ones. The maternity team at GV Health is here to guide and support you through every step of this journey.

When you first become aware of your pregnancy or suspect you might be pregnant, the first step is to make an appointment with your local General Practitioner (GP) to confirm your pregnancy and have a general checkup.

Once your pregnancy is confirmed, your GP will take a full medical history, organise an antenatal screen, dating scan and 12-week ultrasound. Your GP should also discuss with you the option of genetic testing. Prior to 12 weeks gestation, this includes the combined screen and/or Non-Invasive Pre Natal Testing (NIPT). This is an additional test used as a screening tool for genetic abnormalities. These tests are an out of pocket expense.

After 13weeks gestation, genetic testing is still available and can be arranged by your health care provider.

Once these results are received, your GP will need to send a referral through to GV Health.

What’s involved in a full antenatal screen?

Antenatal bloods taken in the first trimester are used as a screening, to ensure you and your baby are healthy throughout your pregnancy. The following tests should be requested by your GP once your pregnancy has been confirmed:

  • Blood group and antibodies
  • Full blood examination
  • Iron levels
  • Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, HIV and Syphilis
  • Rubella levels
  • Urine culture for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea

I have completed my bloods and scans and my referral has been sent to GV Health, what happens next?

You will be contacted by phone or mail for a booking in appointment with a midwife.

This usually takes place between 12-16 weeks either via phone or in Rosewood Antenatal Clinics located on site at GV Health.
