Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing Program (RUSoN)

GV health support undergraduate nursing students to consolidate learning with RUSoN Program.

The role of the RUSON is to provide support to the nursing team in the delivery of safe and quality patient centred care, under the direction, delegation and supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Elements of direct and indirect patient care may be delegated by the supervising Registered Nurse (RN) in accordance with the RN’s assessed nursing care needs of patients and aligned to the professional and clinical judgement of the supervising RN.

Our areas of practice for Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing Program (RUSoN) include our acute medical and surgical wards and our Rehabilitation/ Geriatric Evaluation and Palliative care wards.

Our areas of practice for Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing Program (RUSoN)

RUSoNs at GV Health work across a variety of settings depending on service needs and your stage of training, including:

  • Medical Unit

  • Surgical Unit

  • Mary Coram Unit (Sub-acute/rehabilitation)

  • Emergency Department

  • Maternity Services

  • Aged and Community Services

  • Mental Health Services

  • Primary and Community Care Programs

  • Regional campuses (Rushworth, Tatura, Seymour, Cobram, Benalla, Echuca, Wodonga)

In our acute units—such as Medical, Surgical and Emergency—you will support nurses with:

  • patient hygiene and comfort care

  • mobility assistance and safe patient handling

  • nutrition support and meal set-ups

  • pressure care and repositioning

  • patient observation and safety monitoring

  • maintaining a safe, tidy ward environment

This is a fast-paced, team-based environment ideal for building foundational nursing skills.

In areas such as Mary Coram Unit and rehabilitation services, you may:

  • assist patients with long-term recovery needs

  • support mobilisation and therapy-related activities

  • provide encouragement, social engagement and diversional activities

  • help maintain routines that support independence

  • work closely with allied health teams

This environment is suited for students who value continuity of care and building rapport with patients.

Depending on placement needs, RUSoNs may support community programs by:

  • assisting with patient transport or mobility

  • participating in health promotion activities

  • supporting care delivery in residential or outreach settings

  • liaising with families and carers under RN supervision

These roles offer insight into holistic, community-based nursing and patient advocacy.

In mental health settings, RUSoNs work under the supervision of Registered Nurses to:

  • provide supportive engagement with consumers

  • assist with observation and patient safety monitoring

  • contribute to therapeutic and diversional activities

  • maintain a safe, respectful environment aligned with trauma-informed care

This is ideal for students interested in mental health, crisis support and multidisciplinary teamwork.

While RUSoNs do not perform direct clinical paediatric interventions, roles in children’s services may include:

  • assisting families with care routines

  • supporting comfort, settling and supervision

  • creating safe, child-friendly spaces

  • providing administrative support under RN direction

This offers meaningful exposure to paediatric and family-centred care.
