For Occupational Therapist Mori Fadakaran, choosing to settle in Shepparton was more than a career move, it was a life changing decision.

Originally from Iran, Mori spent a decade working in hospitals, including three years in senior OT roles focused on traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.

After moving to Australia two years ago, he spent a year in Melbourne before applying for a hospital-based role at GV Health.

“I was new to the country and open to trying a different city,” he said.

“I just wanted to be in a hospital setting again.

“When I came to Shepparton, I didn’t know what to expect, but I’ve never looked back.”

Mori says the lifestyle in Shepparton has exceeded all expectations.

“Compared to Melbourne, everything here is better for me,” he said.

“The house, the neighbourhood, the community, it’s calmer, friendlier and more affordable.

“It fits exactly what I wanted.”

The support from GV Health’s Community Connector service helped smooth the transition, connecting Mori and his wife, also a healthcare worker, with rental options and a welcoming local network.

“Even on our first day, someone invited us for dinner,” he said.

“That meant a lot.”

Professionally, Mori says the team environment at GV Health is one of the most supportive he’s experienced.

“My colleagues and managers have been incredible,” he said.

“There’s autonomy, professional development opportunities, and respect for what each person brings.”

A serious health scare just six months into his time at GV Health further cemented his appreciation for the care and community he now calls home.

“I was diagnosed with a brain tumour and needed surgery,” Mori said.

“The support I received from colleagues and the wider community was overwhelming.

“I felt looked after, like I was part of a family.”

Now, Mori says Shepparton doesn’t just feel like home, it is home.

“I’m not just living here, I belong here,” he said.

“I’m part of this community, and I’m grateful every day.”
