Fiona Blick - Community Connector

When new recruits arrive at GV Health, it’s often Community Connector Coordinator Fiona Blick who’s waiting on the other end of the phone – ready to make them feel welcome before they even arrive.

Working closely with GV Health through the Committee for Greater Shepparton, Fiona helps new staff and their families settle comfortably into the region.

“I reach out to new starters even before they’ve landed,” Fiona said.

“It could be helping find a school for the kids, linking them in with sporting clubs or cultural groups, or just answering those little questions, like where to get groceries, how to find a rental, or if the tap water is safe to drink.”

While her support might seem simple, the impact is enormous.

Research shows that staff supported through the Community Connector Program are significantly more likely to stay long term.

“Moving is a big decision,” Fiona said.

“If a partner or child isn’t happy, no amount of money will make someone stay.

“This program supports the whole family, whether it’s helping partners find work or making sure kids are connected with activities they love.”

The program also creates social opportunities for new arrivals to meet others outside their workplace, helping them feel part of a wider community from day one.

“Shepparton is an easy sell,” Fiona said

“It’s affordable, diverse, welcoming and it offers real career opportunities.

“I don’t come from here originally, but I’ve never felt more embraced by a place.”

With Fiona’s help, new staff are doing more than starting a job, they’re starting a new life.
