For Benjamin Hicks, what began as a one-year gap between school and university has turned into an 11-year career at GV Health.

Ben (4)

Ben started in 2014 as a cleaner in the Environmental Services team, fresh out of school.

“I was only planning a gap year,” he said.

“But I enjoyed it so much, I’ve had 11 gap years in a row.”

After two years, Ben became an orderly, a job he loved for the movement, variety and late-night quiet of hospital shifts. “

You’d see everyone, talk to patients and staff across the wards,” he said.

“It made you feel part of something bigger.”

Three years ago, Ben moved into the Supply Department as a Procurement Officer, where he ensures the timely and efficient supply of goods to all GV Health campuses and external sites, while providing support with product information and other supply-related enquiries.

From medical supplies to cleaning products, his work ensures every ward has what it needs.

“If a patient needs something urgently, it has to be here,” he said.

A proud Shepparton local, Ben says what drives him is simple: “I feel proud knowing my work keeps things running and makes a difference for the community I grew up in.”
