When Physiotherapist Alexandra Liacos joined GV Health in mid-2023, she knew exactly where she wanted her career to head.

After completing a rotational Grade 1 role in Echuca, Alex was eager to step into Grade 2 rehabilitation, with a strong passion for sub-acute and stroke rehabilitation.

Now working full time in the Mary Coram Unit (MCU), Alex plays a key role in supporting people as they transition out of hospital and back into everyday life.

That might mean returning home, adapting to new routines, or finding a new sense of independence and quality of life.

“For me, it’s about helping people get back on their feet, physically and socially,” Alex said.

“We don’t just work on movement.

“We problem-solve, think creatively, and help people and their families work out how life will look once they leave hospital.”

Stroke rehabilitation is where Alex feels particularly inspired.

“The brain has so much potential to change,” she said.

“No two people present the same way, so everything we do is tailored to the individual.

“Seeing that progress is incredibly rewarding.”

Alex credits the MCU’s strong multidisciplinary culture as one of the highlights of working at GV Health.

“There’s constant senior support and genuine teamwork,” she said.

“You’re never working alone, and you’re always learning from the people around you.”

That team-based approach was reflected in Alex being named Young Professional of the Year at the SPC Business Excellence Awards.

“It felt really special, but it’s not just about me,” she said.

“Rehab is never a one-person effort.”

Helping people reconnect with their community is what keeps Alex motivated.

“It’s such a rewarding job,” she said.

“I genuinely love what I do.”
