Works Begin to Enhance Emergency Department

Renovation works are beginnning at the GV Health emergency department to expand the waiting area and improve facilities for families.

The expansion has been planned in response to public feedback about the need for improved and expanded facilities for patients waiting for treatment and their families or carers.

Donna Sherringham, GV Health Executive Director Clinical Operations, said the renovations are being funded by community donations to help improve patient flow through the emergency department.

“Expanding and improving the facilities within the emergency department will enable us to better respond to the emergency care needs of the community in the future.

“Enhancing the physical waiting room amenities and providing an additional 25 square metres of space will double the size of the waiting area.

“The installation of new signage in the emergency department will improve communication and ensure clear directions are provided to patients upon their arrival at the hospital, and about what to do when they get there, ” said Ms Sherringham.

The building works will be completed in three stages:

  • Stage 1: Two cubicles will be re-designed to meet the specific needs of children and families.Windows and doors made from switchable glass will be used, instead of the traditional cubicle curtain, to provide privacy and security. With the flick of a switch, the glass can turn from clear to frosted to enable observation and / or privacy.
  • A new access point will be created from the emergency department into the imaging department and the rest of the organisation to streamline the movement of patients in and out of the department.
  • Stage 2: The nursing station overlooking the short-stay beds will be upgraded to offer better functionality and oversight of patients.
  • Stage 3: Starting approximately July 2015, will expand the waiting area for the emergency department, to include 20 additional seats to the current 20 seats. A child-friendly play area will be created to entertain children with appropriate toys in a secure environment.

A temporary entrance will be created into the emergency department when this work begins. However, there will be no disruption to services within the emergency department during construction.
