Mental Health Services

Goulburn Valley Area Mental Health Service provides an innovative range of services for individuals suffering from, or at risk of, serious mental health problems requiring short and long-term treatment and support. The service covers the municipalities of Mitchell, Murrindindi, Strathbogie, Greater Shepparton and Moira.

Referral to any of the Goulburn Valley Area Mental Health Services can be made via Centralised Triage on 1300 369 005.

People can refer themselves or be referred by a health professional. The service is staffed by a dedicated team of local skilled and experienced mental health professionals 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The GV Area Mental Health Aboriginal Liaison Officer is available to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people attending assessments, who are currently being case managed or those admitted to our Inpatient Unit (Wanyarra). Adult Mental Health Service

This service is provided to people aged between 16-64 years of age. The inpatient service is located on the GV Health Campus in Shepparton. Community Services are available to provide assessment, acute care and case management from teams based at Monash Street Shepparton and Beta Street Seymour.

Wanyarra Acute Inpatient Unit

Wanyarra is a 20 bed acute psychiatric inpatient unit for people aged 16 years and over, residing in the Goulburn Valley and Lower Hume areas.

Treatment and care involves a person being allocated a Psychiatrist on admission. The Psychiatrist and treating team of medical officers, nursing and other allied health staff, will work with individuals to develop a treatment plan. Families/carers will be encouraged to be involved in this plan, in consultation with the individual.

Aged Persons Mental Health Service

This service provides assessment, treatment, case management, acute care and psycho geriatric nursing home care for eligible people over the age of 65 years, or under 65 years if the person has an aged related condition.

Child and Youth Mental Health Service

The Child and Youth Mental Health Service provide specialist mental health services to infants, children, youth and their families/carers including:

  • Early Life Mental Health Service (0-5 years)
  • Autism Spectrum Assessment Team (0 to commencement of school)
  • Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (5-18 years)
  • Youth Justice (12-25 years)
  • Homelessness Youth Dual Diagnosis (12- 21 years)
  • Early Psychosis Service (12-25 years)

Primary Mental Health

This service provides free information, assessment and treatment for depression and anxiety, to all people of all age groups and cultural backgrounds.

A Primary Mental Health team member will first meet with the individual to learn more about their concerns. The team member will then work closely with their doctor or community health worker to develop an assessment, treatment and support plan to help address issues relating to depression and anxiety.

The service can arrange an appointment with a psychiatrist if needed or short-term psychological treatment. A range of group programs are also available.

Consumer Consultants

Consumer Consultants are based at the Goulburn Valley Area Mental Health Service in Monash Street, Shepparton. The aim of Consumer Consultants is to provide opportunities for consumers to have input into the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of Mental Health Services.
