The Oncology Department, located in the Peter Copulos Cancer and Wellness Centre, is open Monday to Friday and is comprised of 12 chairs and two beds.
The department offers both inpatient and outpatient treatment of oncology and haematology patients and provides chemotherapy and supportive treatment to people affected by cancer.
The Oncology Day Unit embraces a patient-focused model of care in which family and friends of patients are welcome.
Patients receiving treatment in the Oncology Department are under the care of Medical Oncologists and Hematologists at Goulburn Valley Health. St Vincent’s Hospital also provides a visiting haematology service.
GV Health medical staff provide support to patients whilst in the unit. Highly trained and experienced cancer nurses administer chemotherapy and provide targeted therapies, and supportive care screening. Scalp cooling is also available for patients receiving treatment at GV Health.
GV Health provides a SURC service for oncology and haematology patients undergoing treatment. SURC is a nurse led clinic established to assist patients in the management of side effects experienced by oral or systemic chemotherapy or immunotherapy treatments.
SURC can be accessed by patients, carers and health professionals via telephone or through a review within the clinic, where advice and follow up is provided and oncology medical support available when required. SURC is staffed 8.30 – 5.00, Monday to Friday. Phone 04 4741 0162 for more information.
Specialised Nursing Services
Specialised Nursing Services offered in the Oncology Department include two Breast Care Nurses, two Prostate Care Nurses, a Bowel and GI Cancer Nurse and a General Cancer Care Liaison Nurse. These Oncology staff provide advice and assistance on how to cope with chemotherapy treatment, coordinate care, provide referrals to other health agencies and provide emotional support and information. They also play a valuable role in education and raising awareness about early detection and treatment.
Self referrals can be made directly to the specialised nurses.
Any patient with an oncology or haematology diagnosis can access the Peter Copulos Cancer and Wellness Centre at GV Health.
A medical doctor’s referral is needed and should include:
- previous past history and medications; and
- any previous radiology and pathology results
