To ensure timely receipt and triage of referrals from GPs, we prefer to receive referrals electronically through eReferral.

If you are not set up for e-Referrals you can fax a referral to (03) 5831 6032. We do not accept referrals by email.

Statewide Referral Criteria (SRC)

From November 1st 2019 GV Health, along with all Victorian public hospitals, are assessing new adult referrals for select core conditions within different specialties, against the Statewide Referral Criteria (SRC).

The SRC provide clear guidance to referring clinicians about which patients will be seen in ADULT public specialist clinics and what investigations are required to support safe and appropriate triage.

A referral that does not meet the criteria, either because it does not meet the threshold or there is essential information missing, will be returned to the referrer.

Referrers will receive a letter clearly stating why the referral has been declined, and referrers will need to submit the entire referral again with all required information. Ensure you include ALL the essential investigations and information as listed in the SRC to prevent your referral being declined again.

However, the SRC will not replace clinical judgement. Referrals may be accepted under exceptional or urgent circumstances, despite the criteria not being met. If you strongly believe that all treatment options have been exhausted and/ or there are extenuating circumstances for a specialist clinic referral, refer your patient to the appropriate specialist clinic, clearly documenting the reasons for the referral.

Other Specialties and Conditions not covered in the Statewide Referral Criteria

To ensure timely access to GV Health specialist clinics, referrals for all other conditions not covered by the SRC, must contain the minimum referral information as detailed in table below

Note: Obstetric and Gynaecological referrals require Obstetric and Gynaecological history also.

Referrals will be triaged according to clinical need by the team in the specialty required for your patient’s condition. The more information you include with your referral, the better we are able to make an accurate assessment of your patient’s needs.

The demand on specialist clinics is high. Consequently, waiting times for some specialties can be quite lengthy.
