GV Health Pre-admission for Elective Surgery

After you have seen your specialist / surgeon your details will be sent to GV Health Elective Admissions.  

You will then be sent a confirmation form stating your elective admission details plus a Pre-admission Health Questionnaire.  This questionnaire is an important document that needs to be completed promptly so your admission can be arranged.  

Once you have returned your completed questionnaire to GV Health you will be given a Pre-admission clinic appointment date and time. You must confirm your attendance on (03) 5832 2411. It is very important that you attend this appointment, failure to attend will result in cancellation or postponement of your operation.

What is a pre-admission clinic?

Pre-admission clinic prepares you for your surgery. 
Hospital staff run the clinics and your clinic may include the following staff:

  • Doctors - who will explain the procedure planned for you and answer any questions you might have
  • Nurses - who will explain what is involved with your hospital stay, your recovery, length of stay in hospital, and going home from hospital.  They will test your urine and weigh you.  They will arrange further tests as required with you.
  • Anaesthetist (not always at all clinics) - who will assess your fitness for surgery and anaesthesia, recommend a type of anaesthesia to suit your needs and discuss pain relief options.
  • Physiotherapist/Occupational Therapist (for joint replacements only)  - who will assess your physical needs and discuss your exercise, recovery and going home plan.

Why should I attend?

  • To have a health assessment done to determine your fitness for surgery.
  • To prepare you for surgery through education, information sharing and answering of any questions you may have.

Can I change my appointment day or time?

Your appointment day and time has been set to ensure that all necessary staff are available to see you and/or answer your questions.  Generally the  day cannot be changed, however there may be some flexibility with the time.

Do I need to have any tests before I come to the pre-admission clinic?

Any pre-operative investigations such as blood tests, ECG will be detailed for you by GV Health Elective Admisssions when they send out your pre-admission clinic appointment details.

What do I need to bring to the Pre-admission clinic?

  • Any medications or puffers currently being used (or a detailed list of amounts and times taken) including herbal and over the counter products purchased from health food shops, supermarkets or pharmacies.
  • Any medical letters, x-rays, or recent blood test results.
  • A fresh urine sample in a clean screw top jar/container.
  • A support person (family or friend) particularly if you have hearing difficulties or a disability that makes you dependant on others for assistance.
  • A list of questions regarding your surgery and/or recovery.

How long will I be at pre-admission clinic?

  • The length of time may vary between 1 to 3 hours for major surgery. You may also required some tests whilst you are here (blood tests, ECG, x-rays)
  • You may be referred on to another doctor or anaesthetist if there are concerns with your health.
